Beckham goes to Hollywood

advertisement

Sir Alex Ferguson was right to get rid of Beckham when he did. He failed to win anything for Real Madrid and has done nothing of note as a footballer since then.

His move to the MLS, 5 months after being booted out of the England team and its captaincy reveals just how much hype and the rockstar lifestyle has become his raison d'etre.

He'll make money from the move to America. There is almost no doubt that it will be a huge deal and American marketing power will squeeze every ounce of value from the Beckham brand.

His wife's music career could even get a new breath of life. The choice of LA and Hollywood is no coincidence. Watch out TomKat, this superstar couple with their British accents will be the new obsession for the US media. What would they be named? BeckSpice? Specks? Speckham?

I am personally happy to see the end of him as a serious footballer. Even though he could cross quite well he was always grossly and dangerously (for England) overrated.

"This week Real Madrid asked me to make a decision regarding my future and the offer to extend my contract for a further two seasons," Beckham told Reuters.

"After discussing several options with my family and my advisors to either stay here in Madrid or join other major British and European teams I have decided to join LA Galaxy and play in the MLS from August this year."

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.
